Probes Selection Guide

Type
Test Object - TYPE
Normal Beam
Straight Beam, vertical/0 deg. scanning with single crystal.
For detecting defects which are oriented parallel to the test surface Examples:- Plates, Forgings, Castings. Bars, Flats, etc.

Angle Beam
Ultrasonic wave travels at a predetermined angle. Single crystal for transmitting and receiving.
For detecting defects which are oriented at an angle to the test surface, to scan inaccessible areas brparts with complicated geometry. Examples: Welds. Pipes. Tubes. Bars. Gears. etc.

'TR' Probe
Dual Crystal, two crystals mounted in one housing. Separate transmitter and receiver crystal.

For detecting defects oriented very near to the test surface (sub.surface), wall thickness measurement of new components or remaining wall thickness'of eroded/corroded components.

Examples: Thin Plates, Pipes, Tubes, etc.

Test Object - METALLURGY

0.5 Inspection of very coarse grain materials like Cast Iron, Manganese Steel Castings -mainly Cast material and non-metals like Rubber, Composites.
1.0 Inspection of materials with coarse grain structures like castings. Also ideal for inspection of hard-to-penetrate materials.
2.0 Large components testing with fair sensitivity requirements, like Forgings, Steel Castings and non-metals like Porcelain.
4.0 Optimum sensitivity, resolution and penetration. For general purpose inspection of heat treated or fine grain structured materials like Mild Steel and low Alloy Steel.
6.0 High sensitivity requirements in inspection of materials like fine grain forgings.
10.0 Very high resolution and sensitivity requirements in inspection of materials like Titanium.
  
Size Test Object - DIMENSION
Probe Series
'N', 'A' and 'TR' For large components which can give full contact to probe surface and also for high gain reserve.
'NM', 'AM' and 'TRM' For small size components and better detectabilitydue to smaller crystal size to flaw size ratio.
'NF', 'AF' and 'TRF' For very small components where area of access or contact area is extremely limited
